What is Stornaway?
Stornaway is a web platform for creating interactive video experiences.
Instead of everyone watching the same linear video from start to finish, viewers can make choices, answer questions and follow different paths based on their responses.
Creators build these journeys in Stornaway using a modular "Story Map" flowchart editor, connecting videos, images, quizzes and other content in a visual flow before testing and publishing the experience.
Itβs particularly useful for training, education, marketing and storytelling, where giving viewers choices makes the experience more engaging and personalised.
The Brief
Stornaway came to us with an established interactive video platform, a mature Ruby on Rails codebase already serving a large and fast-growing customer base.
They wanted Ruby on Rails experts to serve as an extension of their team, adding senior engineering capacity as they scaled the platform for enterprise customers.
So we started where we like to start: with our Codebase Audit service. It gave mmtm a clear view of how the application is structured, its strengths, and where the biggest opportunities were for the next stage of growth. This enabled us to understand the codebase, product, and business before getting stuck in.
The audit spanned the whole codebase and became a staged, prioritised roadmap for Stornaway to deliver against - which we've worked on side by side ever since.
Our Partnership
Working alongside Stornaway's team, we've collaborated on delivering a steady stream of large-scale new features.
These include a new Design Editor system, giving creators more control over the look and feel of their interactive choices; a folders and sharing system for organising projects across teams; enterprise capabilities such as SSO; and a series of CDN improvements.
We've also helped make the platform more modern and maintainable - keeping it on the latest Ruby and Rails releases, modernising the gem stack, and consolidating the test suite from Cypress onto RSpec.
Together, this has helped keep the platform clean, current, and built for scale. π

Our support helps Stornaway continue to land and serve high-profile clients, along with a growing number of universities adopting the platform for training and teaching.
